Psychologist SAM BURSNALL

For over 20 years I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals as they navigate life’s challenges. Whether it’s supporting new parents through the perinatal period, helping someone cope with anxiety, depression, or loss, or supporting people through difficult transitions, I’ve worked with clients from all walks of life and diverse backgrounds.

In addition to my clinical practice, I’ve contributed to research, published work, facilitated groups, and mentored fellow psychologists. I continue to stay engaged in research and remain committed to evidence-based practice through regular training and professional development.

Clinical Approach

I understand that reaching out for help can feel like a big step, so I’m committed to providing a non-judgemental and safe space where my clients feel seen and supported to work through whatever they’re carrying. My role is to understand what you bring and apply my experience and knowledge to shape it into support that works uniquely for you and helps you move forward.

My therapeutic approach is integrative and informed by developmental, systemic, neurobiology, and attachment theories. I utilise a range of psychological therapies (simply put, a range of evidence-based tools), including:

  • Compassion-Focused Therapy
  • Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Attachment Theory
  • Expressive Therapies

I see individuals on either a time limited basis to work on a specific challenge(s), or longer-term if further support is needed.  I don’t consider any problem to be too trivial.

About Sam

Dr Samantha (Sam) Bursnall is a registered psychologist with AHPRA and registered as a clinical psychologist with the HCPC in the UK. She trained as a psychologist in Australia (B.Beh.Sc (Hons); PhD), and spent two decades working in London, including the NHS (Tavistock Child and family and perinatal teams), corporate sector (large US investment bank) and private practice.

She works with a variety of challenges, with a special interest in perinatal mental health:

  • Perinatal mental health (mothers, fathers and non-birthing parents), including fertility struggles, miscarriage, birth related difficulties, transition to parenthood, returning to work
  • Parenting support (under 5’s)
  • Anxiety, depression, and stress-related difficulties (family, work, loss and adjustment to life transitions)

Sam works from our Morningside practice on Mondays, and Red Hill on Fridays.
